Job Description

General Summary

This position is one of the highest-ranking technical positions in the Engineering Division.  It provides support and technical direction to all materials research departments within the Division.  The overall charter of the Engineering Fellow is to oversee and safeguard the technical integrity of the engineering business.

  • Serves as materials and processing subject matter expert, particularly of TPS materials for NSWC RSO
  • Drives advanced technical development and proof-of-concept incubation efforts on select technology areas
  • Provides technical leadership and mentoring to engineers
  • Leads technical strategy of materials business units to compete in external marketplace with particular focus on the NSWC materials and technical needs
  • Advises on near- and far-term technical capability advancement of Division (where to invest resources / resource allocation)
  • Teams with business unit leaders to engage sponsors to help procure new work and identify business growth opportunities in core business, with a particular focus on Navy opportunities
  • Forecasts technical posturing from competitors and develops counter strategies

Position Specific

  • Monitors and guides application of company funds that advance technical capability
  • Develops and executes business capture strategies for NSWC-related program areas
  • Provides input to decisions to move forward with large technical acquisitions and advancements
  • Performs other duties as required by Director.


Experience and Skills

Minimum Qualifications

  • US Citizenship required
  • Must have/maintain an active security clearance at a level equivalent to Department of Defense (DOD) SECRET
  • M.S. degree in Engineering or Mathematics
  • Minimum of twelve years relevant work experience in research management
  • Strong business acumen, with demeanor and ability to work comfortably and confidently with senior management
  • Proven ability to work in a diverse, fast-paced environment with limited supervision; excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple tasks
  • Demonstrated initiative, creativity, and ability to develop, communicate, and implement successful strategic initiatives
  • Self-directed and confident, with a developed ability to build team-oriented or shared commitment and goals to achieve high standards of performance

 Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in a science or engineering discipline

This position involves work in an office and laboratory environment and could require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including:

Physical Demands

In performing the work for this position, the engineer must be able to:

  • Perform work utilizing a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Sit for extended periods of time without being able to leave the work area.
  • Stand for extended periods of time without being able to leave the work area.
  • Climb ladders and stairs in performing the work.
