Job Description

GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:

  • Responsible for the Electrical/Electronic system design, test, and integration on all Unmanned Aerial Vehicle platforms specifically the flight controls system architecture.  Provides interface to other engineering design and development disciplines, ensuring that the flight controls electrical/electronics  and mechanical requirements are addressed and satisfied during overall system integration.  Ensure that the flight controls system sensors, actuators and flight control computer can support the throughput, redundancy and failure mode requirements of the system.  Layout the electrical and data architecture for the flight control system.  Work with power management, thermal management and installation groups to integrate the flight control system within the rest of the platform.  Develop the system level test requirements for the flight control systems

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

The duties and responsibilities listed below apply to all levels of Systems Electrical Engineers.  Each level of Systems Electrical Engineer has additional duties and responsibilities listed.

  • Understands customer requirements and prepares requirements documents.
  • Prepares formal, controlled engineering documentation (i.e. drawings, specifications, parts lists, interface control documents, test procedures, etc.).
  • Prepares and presents design review material in support of technical interchange meetings with suppliers and external/internal customers.
  • Ensures customer satisfaction in relation to projects.
  • Supports system testing, trouble shooting, and problem resolution. 
  • Supports flight testing, data reduction, analysis, and reporting. 
  • Prepares test plans and reports.
  • Ensures briefings to customers and external parties are appropriate and aligned with overall program strategy.
  • Collaborates with Quality Assurance personnel to analyze customer complaints and/or quality escapes, and assist to drive corrective or preventative action to closure as needed.
  • Manages effort and time within the budget and schedule provided for the task.
  • Follows safety precautions and procedures.
  • Ensures that the work area and equipment are kept clean.
  • Complies with established Quality Management System and company procedures.

Systems Electrical Engineer III

 

  • Acts as the Lead Systems Electrical Engineer for very complex projects as determined by Manager that affect multiple systems, involve several suppliers/teaming partners, and require frequent customer interface.
  • Acts as Test Director when necessary.
  • Prepares and presents design review and technical interchange material to major customers.
  • Reports progress in meeting customer requirements periodically.
  • Mentors Level I-II Systems Electrical Engineers.
  • Provides direction and oversight, both technically and programmatically, to other engineers.
  • Supports business development efforts both in preparation of quotes and proposals as well as sales efforts.
  • Monitors and reports on customer satisfaction in relation to projects.

 

 

 

Systems Electrical Engineer IV

 

  • Acts as the Lead Systems Electrical Engineer for very complex projects as determined by Manager that affect multiple systems, involve several suppliers/teaming partners, and require frequent customer interface.
  • Acts as Test Director when necessary.
  • Prepares and presents design review material in support of technical interchange meetings with suppliers and external/internal customers.
  • Plans projects and executes to the plan with attention to detail, meeting schedule and cost milestones for assigned tasks.
  • Provides direction and oversight, both technically and programmatically, to other engineers.
  • Manages the engineering team’s effort and time within the budget and schedule provided for the task.
  • Reports project status periodically (actual budget/schedule vs. proposed budget/schedule).
  • Reports progress in meeting customer requirements periodically.
  • Mentors Level I-III Systems Engineers.
  • Supports business development efforts both in preparation of quotes and proposals as well as sales efforts.
  • Monitors and reports on customer satisfaction in relation to projects.

  • May be required to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance at the appropriate level (requires U.S. Citizenship). 

 

Additional Desirable Qualifications:

  • Familiarity and exposure to AS9100 and ISO systems

  • Experience in a manufacturing and/or developmental engineering environment

  • Knowledge of aircraft and unmanned aircraft design preferred

  • Experience with composites

  • Strong project management skills.

  • Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma certification

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  

Each successive level of Systems Engineer builds on the identified education and experience listed for the previous level(s) of Systems Engineer

 

Systems Engineer III

  • Requires BS degree in Engineering (Systems/Electrical Engineering preferred).
  • 5 + years related experience in systems engineering.

     

Additional Desirable Skills:

  • 3+ years lead engineer experience in the aerospace industry.

 

Systems Engineer IV

  • Requires BS degree in Engineering (Systems/Electrical Engineering preferred).
  • 8 + years related experience in systems engineering.

 

Additional Desirable Skills:

  • 6+ years lead engineer experience in the aerospace industry.

 WORK ENVIRONMENT / PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Office and manufacturing environment

  • Ability to stand and sit for long periods of time

  • Ability to perform repetitive motion (keyboarding, computer workphones)

  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds

  • May work extended hours or weekends

  • May be exposed to possible shop hazards including high noise level, high pressure equipment, chemicals, and shop activity.

  • Frequent outside contact with customers and suppliers.

  • Employee may generate, handle, manage, or work around hazardous materials and hazardous wastes.

 

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: 

  • 10-15% - May travel occasionally to support new business development and customer maintenance, travel locally between KUAS locations.
