Job Description

The Field Engineer & Customer Support will have a thorough knowledge of the installation of Satellite and telecommunications related systems and/or equipment, gained from considerable and varied experience in working with the installation, service activation, maintenance, and repair of telecommunication systems and devices. This candidate should also be formally educated in an appropriate engineering and/or technology based subject. This position reports to the VP, Engineering.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for installation, configuration, maintenance, testing, and repair of radio-frequency (RF) equipment and Satellite network equipment used in large-scale satellite downlink and uplink operations such as waveguide assemblies, cables, and fiber-optic systems.
  • Performs component-level troubleshooting of RF TX/RX systems including fiber-optic systems, upconverters, downconverters, RF switching units, Antenna Control Units (ACUs), Low-Noise Amplifiers (LNAs) and Low-Noise Block Downconverters (LNBs). Performs maintenance and repair on large transmit/receive and receive-only satellite antenna systems.
  • Performs moderately complex on-site installation, preventative maintenance and routine repair of electronic and electromechanical equipment such as up/down converters, HPA's, fiber optic subsystems, LNA/LNB's, antennas, IP and Baseband equipment (modems, multiplexers, DVB and Broadband technology platforms) and video systems.
  • Must have the ability to read and interpret schematics, assemble wave guide systems, utilize sophisticated test equipment, perform documentation tasks, and interact with management & engineering teams.
  • Manages and provides technical support to field crews during the installation and commissioning of the modernized satellite equipment, including on the job training and training customers when appropriate.
  • Assists with the problem solving of technical issues within the company.
  • Maintains documentation on repairs, down time, changes and updates.
  • Performs basic software troubleshooting and diagnostics while on-site.
  • Exhibits an understanding of engineering application configurations and integration with the desktop.
  • Applies electrical, electronic theory and related knowledge, usually under the direction of engineering staff, to build, repair, calibrate, and modify electrical components, circuitry, controls, and machinery
  • Implements software changes (Upload, Download & SW Regression) and installs new software and hardware
  • When in the office, assists technical support with field inquiries and troubleshoots customer issues.

 

Experience and Skills

Qualifications:

  • 2 years post-secondary /AAS degree (or equivalent) and 6+ years’ experience in the operation, maintenance, installation and commissioning of Satellite, RF, or similar type of electronic communications systems.
  • Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Security clearance preferred.
  • Must be able to travel (50- 75%) and work in remote locations for several weeks at a time.
  • Capable of lifting 70 pounds and able to climb ladders.
  • Advanced knowledge of antennas and feeds, RF TX/RX equipment, and SATCOM system test.
  • Good understanding of fundamentals of analog, digital and RF electronics.
  • Hands-on experience with operation and programming of bench RF/DC test equipment such as Network/ Scalar Analyzers, Signal Generators, Power Meters, Oscilloscopes and Spectrum Analyzers.
  • Good working knowledge of power testing, AC and DC including 3 Phase AC. Familiar with configuration and operation of 24VDC & 48 VDC power supplies.
  • Needs to lead a team on-site during install and be able to communicate with all levels within our organization and the Customer

Preferred / Additional Skills:

  • Proficient in Microsoft and the components of the MS Office Suite.
  • Willingness and/or ability to work outside regularly scheduled hours to meet operational needs.
  • Excellent customer service skills (both written and oral).
  • Ability to work in high stress and high visibility environment.
  • System level and bench level electronics troubleshooting experience
  • Operational configurations awareness and routine preventative maintenance skills required
