Job Description

The Safety Coordinator is responsible for the Safety and Mission Success of the Kratos Defense & Rocket Support Services (KDRSS) assigned Sounding Rocket systems.  The Safety Coordinator provides the Safety vision for the assigned Sounding Rocket systems.  This position reports to the Safety and Mission Assurance Manager.

The Safety Coordinator facilitates communication, synergy and a safety mindset across the assigned Sounding Rocket systems team through the development and adherence to a Safety Plan.


  • Supports the Safety and Mission Assurance Manager in the management of all KDRSS and teammate personnel in the area of Safety on assigned Sounding Rocket systems.
  • Supports the Safety and Mission Assurance Manager in ensuring proper implementation of safety requirements into the design, test, and operation of assigned Sounding Rocket systems.
  • Supports the Safety and Mission Assurance Manager in the management of all deliverable documents, supplier safety programs, and preparation of analyses to include Software Safety, Fault Tree Analysis, and Hardware Safety.
  • Participates in the program’s and the KDRSS Safety Review Boards (SRBs).
  • Provides regular status reports to the Safety and Mission Assurance Manager, Program Management, the Chief Engineer and Customer leadership.
  • Supports the Safety and Mission Assurance Manager in serving as a contact, as assigned, to coordinate with internal and external customers to include the Program Management team, other managers, and Systems Safety and Mission Assurance personnel.
  • Supports the Safety and Mission Assurance Manager in providing industry insight for safety requirements that affect the design, production and operation of the assigned Sounding Rocket systems.
  • Serves as a KDRSS resource team member in the definition of system safety program fundamentals including, risk identification, analysis and control of hardware and software hazards.
  • Supports the Safety and Mission Assurance Manager in participating in preliminary design activities providing advice and counsel in the area of safety requirements.
  • Supports the Safety and Mission Assurance Manager in the enforcement of the execution of company Safety engineering design processes.
  • Supports the Safety and Mission Assurance Manager in the collaboration with government counterparts and supplier Safety and responsible engineers in support of program execution

 Other Job Functions

  • Daily Contractor Safety Toolbox Meetings.
  • Conduct daily on-site Safety Inspections in compliance with contractual specifications and customer expectations.
  • Inspect the job site for safety violations and documents said violations.
  • Conduct or participate in weekly safety meetings and safety inspections as outlined in the safety manual.
  • All safety reporting on the job site and to the Safety and Mission Assurance Manager.
  • Ensure all site workers are properly trained and have the knowledge to work safely on job site.
  • Provide daily safety briefings for site workers.
  • Accident/incident/injury investigation including after action reviews (AAR).
  • Review Activity Hazard Analysis (AHA) and conducts routine safety meetings and inspections.
  • Provide support to interpret the contract documents to ensure complete conformance with plans and specifications.
  • Enforce OSHA standards and regulations on job-site.
  • Enforce NASA Safety standards and regulations on job-site.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Experience and Skills


  • Safety engineering and/or project management experience.
  • Safety technical knowledge of assigned Sounding Rocket systems and related support systems.
  • Knowledge of NASA and military Safety operations.
  • Excellent communication and relationship skills with Senior Leadership, Program Management, Customers, Systems Safety and Mission Assurance team and engineering team members.
  • Proficiency with MS Office products.
  • Strong understanding and experience with Safety fundamentals.
  • Strong presentation preparation and delivery skills with audiences such as Subcontractors, Prime and Government.
  • Strong technical writing skills to communicate internally or externally.
  • Demonstrated passion for Safety customer satisfaction.
  • Ability to maintain sensitive and confidential information as required by government standards.
  • Ability to interact effectively with peers and supervisors.
  • Ability to interact appropriately with the public when necessary.
  • Ability to adhere to workplace rules.
  • Ability to effectively communicate professionally in writing or verbally with all levels of personnel>
  • Flexibility to handle changing requirements and prioritize in a dynamic environment.

 Additional Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Safety experience in the Sounding Rocket or Ballistic Missile industry.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally to meet department and company goals and requirements for the assigned Sounding Rocket system.
  • Knowledge of KDRSS operations and procedures preferred.
  • May require up to 25% travel to support technical meetings, design reviews, other reviews and meetings and launch operations.
  • Familiarity with OSHA standards and regulations, NASA Safety and Mission Assurance Acronyms, Abbreviations and Definitions (NASA-HDBK-8709.22), NASA Safety Culture Handbook (NASA-HDBK-8709.24) and NASA Policy for Safety and Mission Success (NPD 8700.1) preferred.



  • Bachelor’s degree in an applicable engineering, technical, or science discipline.
  • Minimum of ten (5) years relevant experience with Systems Safety, preferably within the Sounding Rocket or Ballistic Missile industries.
  • May be required to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance at the appropriate level (requires U.S. Citizenship).

  • May work extended hours or weekends to to complete tasks and meet schedule
  • May work in manufacturing and/or field environments with potential exposure to uncontrolled climate conditions and potential exposure to noise, dust and hazardous chemicals
  • Ability to lift up to twenty-five (25) pounds
  • Ability to perform repetitive motion (computer work, phones)
  • Ability to stand and sit for long period of time
