Job Description

The Quality Engineer is responsible for the Quality and Mission Success of the Kratos Defense & Rocket Support Services (KDRSS) assigned Sounding Rocket systems.  The Quality Engineer provides the Quality vision for the assigned Sounding Rocket systems.  This position reports to the Safety and Mission Assurance Manager.

 The Quality Engineer facilitates communication, synergy and a quality mindset across the assigned Sounding Rocket systems team through the development and adherence to a Quality Plan.

The Quality Engineer will lead the quality planning efforts to ensure the correct safety of launch and flight applications, inspection certifications, and customer requirements. 


  • Supports the Safety and Mission Assurance Manager in the management of all KDRSS and teammate personnel in the area of Quality on assigned Sounding Rocket systems.
  • Supports the Safety and Mission Assurance Manager in ensuring proper implementation of quality requirements into the design, test, and operation of assigned Sounding Rocket systems.
  • Supports the Safety and Mission Assurance Manager in the management of all deliverable documents, supplier quality programs, and preparation of analyses to include Software Quality and Hardware Quality.
  • Provides regular status reports to the Safety and Mission Assurance Manager, Program Management, the Chief Engineer & Customer leadership.
  • Supports the Safety and Mission Assurance Manager in serving as a contact, as assigned, to coordinate with internal and external customers to include the Program Management team, other managers, and Systems Safety and Mission Assurance personnel.
  • Supports the Safety and Mission Assurance Manager in providing industry insight for quality requirements that affect the design, production and operation of the assigned Sounding Rocket systems.
  • Supports the Safety and Mission Assurance Manager in participating in preliminary design activities providing advice and counsel in the area of quality requirements.
  • Supports the Safety and Mission Assurance Manager in the enforcement of the execution of company Quality Engineering design processes.
  • Supports the Safety and Mission Assurance Manager in the collaboration with government counterparts and supplier Quality and responsible engineers in support of program execution.

 Other Job Functions

  • Leads integration of contractual and KDRSS Quality Management System requirements into all aspects of proposals and program processes and documentation.
  • Provides interpretation of complex Quality Engineering requirements.
  • Develops quality metrics, design and production certification plans for large programs to ensure compliance with contractual, Company and regulatory requirements.
  • Develops Quality Engineering criteria to support supplier selection activities. Leads various reviews to ensure quality attributes are incorporated into product designs.
  • Develops and selects methods for analysis, testing and audit to ensure manufacturing and test readiness
  • Service Life Modification, DCMA and/or NASA Quality Engineering corrective action request assistance and resolutions
  • Shop assistance as required.
  • Assists in development of new standards repairs for non-conformances.
  • Analyzes non-conformance trends to evaluate effectiveness of corrective actions.
  • Develops and implements corrective actions.
  • Performs benchmarking and other forms of advanced analysis to ensure specified processes capability levels are achieved.
  • Works under minimal direction.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Experience and Skills


  • Quality Engineering and/or project management experience.
  • Quality Engineering technical knowledge of assigned Sounding Rocket systems and related support systems.
  • Knowledge of NASA and military Quality Engineering operations.
  • Excellent communication and relationship skills with Senior Leadership, Program Management, Customers, Systems Safety and Mission Assurance team and engineering team members.
  • Proficiency with MS Office products.
  • Strong understanding and experience with Quality Engineering fundamentals.
  • Strong presentation preparation and delivery skills with audiences such as Subcontractors, Prime and Government.
  • Strong technical writing skills to communicate internally or externally.
  • Demonstrated passion for Quality Engineering customer satisfaction.
  • Ability to maintain sensitive and confidential information as required by government standards.
  • Ability to interact effectively with peers and supervisors.
  • Ability to interact appropriately with the public when necessary.
  • Ability to adhere to workplace rules.
  • Ability to effectively communicate professionally in writing or verbally with all levels of personnel.
  • Flexibility to handle changing requirements and prioritize in a dynamic environment.

 Additional Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Quality Engineering experience in the Sounding Rocket or Ballistic Missile industry.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally to meet department and company goals and requirements for the assigned Sounding Rocket system.
  • Knowledge of KDRSS operations and procedures preferred.
  • May require up to 25% travel to support technical meetings, design reviews, other reviews and meetings and launch operations.
  • Familiarity with NASA Quality Assurance Program Policy (NPD 8730.5), Management of Government Quality Assurance Functions for NASA Contracts (NPR 8735.2) and NASA Quality Assurance Working Group (QAWG) preferred.



  • Bachelor’s degree in an applicable engineering, technical, or science discipline.
  • Minimum of five (5) years relevant experience with Quality Engineering, preferably within the Sounding Rocket or Ballistic Missile industries.
  • Five (5) or more years of experience QMS requirements.
  • Three (3) or more years of experience in Sounding Rocket or Ballistic Missile structures preferred.
  • May be required to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance at the appropriate level (requires U.S. Citizenship).

  • May work extended hours or weekends to to complete tasks and meet schedule
  • May work in manufacturing and/or field environments with potential exposure to uncontrolled climate conditions and potential exposure to noise, dust and hazardous chemicals
  • Ability to lift up to twenty-five (25) pounds
  • Ability to perform repetitive motion (computer work, phones)
  • Ability to stand and sit for long period of time
