Job Description

The Production Planning Manager is responsible for the Mission Success and the Production Planning Integrity of the Kratos Defense & Rocket Support Services (KDRSS) assigned Sounding Rocket systems.  Responsible to the Manufacturing Manager for all sounding rocket operations.

The Production Planning Manager responsibilities include the scheduling of dispatch, inspection, quality management, inventory management, supply management and equipment management.

The Production Planning Manager assists in the creation and maintenance of viable production and procurements plans which are aligned with KDRSS customer/program requirements.  The Production Planning Manager develops processes and procedures which enable the assigned Sounding Rocket program to efficiently meet requirements set forth in the production and procurement plans, with a emphasis on continuous improvement.  The Production Planning Manager devises and maintains reporting metrics which accurately depicts percentage complete against the approved plans/schedules, and allow for the discovery of potential obstacles in time to implement a risk mitigation strategy.

The Production Planning Manager develops the plan for the overall activities of Receiving, Shipping, Inventory Control and Production Control personnel. 

The Production Planning Manager supports the Manufacturing Manager in the initiation the issuance of manufacturing orders as required by programmatic schedules.  The Production Planning Manager supports the Manufacturing Manager in the monitoring of progress of assigned programs to ensure on time and within budget completion.


  • Develops raw material, equipment, part and stock requirements and scheduling requirements from engineering specifications and production schedules.
  • Coordinate and review engineering changes to raw materials, equipment, part and stock.
  • Works with the Manufacturing Management to include Logistics; Business Management, Subcontract Management, Quality and Engineering teams to plan material, equipment, part and stock movement from purchasing, warehouse/storage and production.
  • Utilizes Material Requirements Planning (MRP) and Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP II) systems to monitor production and inventory.
  • Develop and maintain the integrity of MRP data and how it pertains to manufacturing.
  • Be a source of knowledge and guidance for the use of MRP systems.
  • Responsible for creating a resource plan and resource loading planners across all projects and products.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain process documentation.
  • Establish, maintain the manner of communication about project/product status in manufacturing is relayed.
  • Coordinate and prioritize work orders as they flow through the production and test process.
  • Supports the Manufacturing Manager in the performance of technical planning; system integration; verification and validation; and cost, risk, supportability, and effectiveness analyzes for total systems.
  • Supports the Manufacturing Manager in ensuring the logical and systematic conversion of customer or product requirements into total systems solutions that acknowledge technical constraints.
  • Supports periodic program and mission IPTs, as required.
  • Supports Anomaly Investigation Boards, as required.
  • Supports the Manufacturing Manager in the performance of functional and timeline analysis, conducts detailed trade studies, allocates requirements, and conducts interface definition studies to evaluate compliance of mechanical hardware & software specifications with customer requirements.
  • Analyzes effectiveness/efficiency of NASA program procedures and processes; develops/ recommends improvements.
  • Prepares presentations, reports, research, and other contract deliverables.
  • Participates in selected programs, events, and meetings involving staff, Government customers, and visitors.
  • Works with the Safety and Mission Assurance Manager and Quality Engineer to incorporate the application of the appropriate level of ISO 9000 process improvement.
  • Ability to direct and coordinate various processes essential to manufacturing procedures (e.g., training, safety, housekeeping, cost reduction, worker involvement, security, etc.).
  • Ability to initiate and coordinate projects throughout the developmental and testing phases of the program, (e.g., plant layout changes, installation of capital equipment, major repairs, etc.).
  • Ability to keep current on information and technology affecting functional areas to increase innovation and ensure compliance.
  • Ability to perform miscellaneous duties and projects as assigned and required.

Experience and Skills


  • Production Planning Management experience in the Sounding Rocket or Ballistic Missile industry.
  • Technical knowledge of assigned Sounding Rocket systems and related support systems.
  • Knowledge of NASA and military operations.
  • Excellent communication and relationship skills with Senior Leadership, Program Management, Customers and engineering team members.
  • Proficiency with MS Office products, including MS Project for Integrated Master Schedule development and review.
  • Proficiency with Material Requirements Planning (MRP) and Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP II) systems.
  • Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, cost control and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture, production and distribution of goods.
  • Knowledge of compliance elements for ISO, EVMS and Export regulations.
  • Knowledge of finance, accounting and earned value management practices and procedures.
  • Understanding and experience with manufacturing fundamentals.
  • Presentation preparation and delivery skills with audiences such as Subcontractors, Prime and Government.
  • Technical writing skills to communicate internally or externally.
  • Demonstrated passion for customer satisfaction.
  • Ability to maintain sensitive and confidential information as required by government standards.
  • Ability to interact effectively with peers and supervisors.
  • Ability to interact appropriately with the public when necessary.
  • Ability to adhere to workplace rules.

 Additional Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally to meet department and company goals and requirements for the assigned Sounding Rocket system.
  • Knowledge of KDRSS operations and procedures preferred.
  • May require up to 25% travel to support technical meetings, design reviews, other reviews & meetings and launch operations.




  • High School degree or GED with eight (8) years of professional experience including six (6) years in a position with responsibility for Production Planning within the Sounding Rocket or Ballistic Missile industries.
  • Knowledge of specific Wallops Flight Facility (WFF) and White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) operations a plus.
  • Experience with NASA or military rocket programs involving space domain topics.
  • Experience with navigating and interpreting technical manuals relating to area of expertise.
  • May be required to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance at the appropriate level (requires U.S. Citizenship).


  • Master’s degree in Production Planning or related field and seven (7) years of professional experience including four (4) years in a position with responsibility for Production Planning within the Sounding Rocket or Ballistic Missile industries.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Production Planning or related field and ten (10) years of professional experience including seven (7) years in a Production Planning position with responsibility for Sounding Rocket or Ballistic Missile experience.
