Job Description

The Guidance, Navigation and Control (GNC) Technician is responsible for the Mission Success and the GNC Technical Integrity of the Kratos Defense & Rocket Support Services (KDRSS) assigned Sounding Rocket systems.  Responsible to the Guidance, Navigation and Control (GNC) Engineering Manager for all sounding rocket operations.

The GNC Technician will support the GNC Engineering Manager in the application of their knowledge of control and estimation theory to devise, model, simulate, and analyze missile guidance, navigation and control systems, and to assess their impact on overall systems performance. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Supports the GNC Engineering Manager in the performance of technical planning; system integration; verification and validation; and cost, risk, supportability, and effectiveness analyzes for total systems.
  • Supports the GNC Engineering Manager in ensuring the logical and systematic conversion of customer or product requirements into total systems solutions that acknowledge technical constraints.
  • Supports periodic program and mission IPTs, as required.
  • Supports Anomaly Investigation Boards, as required.
  • Supports the GNC Engineering Manager in the performance of functional and timeline analysis, conducts trade studies, allocates requirements, and conducts interface definition studies to evaluate compliance of GNC hardware & software specifications with customer requirements.
  • Supports the GNC Engineering Manager in the performance of planning, modeling, validation, engineering, and verification activities.
  • Supports the GNC Engineering Manager in the analysis of effectiveness/efficiency of NASA program procedures and processes; develops/ recommends improvements.
  • Prepares presentations, reports, research, and other contract deliverables.
  • Participates in selected programs, events, and meetings involving staff, Government customers, and visitors.
  • Supports the GNC Engineering Manager in working with the Safety and Mission Assurance Manager & Quality Engineer to incorporate the application of the appropriate level of ISO 9000 process improvement.

Experience and Skills

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: 

  • GNC Technician experience in the Sounding Rocket or Ballistic Missile industry.
  • Technical knowledge of assigned Sounding Rocket systems and related support systems.
  • Knowledge of linear control system design and margin analysis.
  • Ability to develop and analyze complex guidance and control algorithms.
  • Experience with optimal state estimation a plus.
  • Experience with Hardware-In-The-Loop (HWIL) testing.
  • Knowledge of NASA & military operations.
  • Communication and relationship skills with Program Management, Customers and engineering team members.
  • Knowledge of MS Office products, including MS Project for Integrated Master Schedule development and review.
  • Knowledge of compliance elements for ISO, EVMS and Export regulations.
  • Knowledge of finance, accounting and earned value management practices and procedures.
  • Understanding and experience with engineering technician fundamentals.
  • Presentation preparation and delivery skills with audiences such as Subcontractors, Prime and Government.
  • Technical writing skills to communicate internally or externally.
  • Demonstrated passion for customer satisfaction.
  • Ability to maintain sensitive and confidential information as required by government standards.
  • Ability to interact effectively with peers and supervisors.
  • Ability to interact appropriately with the public when necessary.
  • Ability to adhere to workplace rules.

Additional Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to work cross-functionally to meet department and company goals and requirements for the assigned Sounding Rocket system.
  • Knowledge of KDRSS operations and procedures preferred.
  • Knowledge of MATLAB software.
  • Knowledge of guidance and control algorithm development.
  • May require up to 25% travel to support technical meetings, design reviews, other reviews & meetings, field integration and launch operations.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Associated Degree in Engineering or completion of DoD Technical Schools and two (2) years of technical experience in an GNC technician position with responsibility for Sounding Rocket or Ballistic Missile experience required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Control Systems Engineering and four (4) years of professional experience including two (2) years in an GNC technician position with responsibility for Sounding Rocket or Ballistic Missile experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of rocket operations throughout the mission lifecycle
  • Knowledge of specific Wallops Flight Facility (WFF) and White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) operations a plus.
  • Experience with NASA or military rocket programs involving space domain topics preferred.
  • Experience in operations performance and optimization capabilities
  •  May be required to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance at the appropriate level (requires U.S. Citizenship).
