Job Description


Designs and drafts components, assemblies and tooling, commensurate with level of experience here at KUAS.




Designer ALL

The duties and responsibilities listed below apply to all levels of Designers.  Each level of Designer has additional duties and responsibilities listed.

  • Confers with design originator, appropriate engineering and other personnel in preparing and finalizing design concepts.
  • Prepares preliminary sketches, models, or diagrams reflecting basic design concept.
  • Using appropriate software, prepares sketches, models and/or complete detail and layout drawings from verbal or written instructions on products and/or equipment.
  • Recommends changes or modifications as appropriate.
  • Prepares and models final layout, detail and assembly drawings.
  • Prepares, revises and processes the generation of the graphical portion of Engineering Change Notices for jobs.
  • Works with engineering to identify problems with performance or tool life and recommends solutions or enhancements.
  • Follows safety precautions.
  • Ensures that the work area and equipment are kept clean.
  • Complies with established QMS procedures.

Designer IV

  • Works under minimal supervision.
  • Performs work of advanced complexity.
  • Has frequent outside contacts as liaison with engineering, suppliers, and customers.
  • Responsible for day to day configuration control.
  • Sets up and maintains an Intranet Web Site.
  • Ensures that others’ design skills are up to date and provides training on CAD, CAD standards, and GD&T.
  • Provides technical guidance to less skilled Designers and design support personnel as required.


Other Job Functions

Within Company
  • Inside immediate department; works closely with Engineers and will receive instructions from appropriate engineering staff.
  • Outside immediate department; occasional contact with production personnel as needed.


Outside of Company

  • Interface with customers and suppliers as needed in the course of project execution; occasional travel to support sales in new business development and customer maintenance as determined by the Engineer responsible for the project.

Each successive level of Designer builds on the identified typical qualifications listed for the previous level(s) Designer. 


Designer IV

  • Requires a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 6 years related experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of CATIA/SolidWorks
    • Drafting
    • Modeling
    • Surfacing
    • Composite Modeler and Drafter
  • Advanced knowledge of GD&T.
  • Proficient with AutoCAD.
  • Proficient with wire harnesses, fuel systems, aircraft control systems, powerplants, communications and avionics equipment.
  • Proficient with composite manufacturing and plastic compression mold tooling.
  • Proficient with composite assembly tooling.
  • Proficient with MS Project and Access.
  • May be required to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance at the appropriate level (requires U.S. Citizenship).

  • Ability to stand and sit for long periods of time

  • Ability to perform repetitive motion (keyboarding, 10-key, phones)

  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds
  • May work extended hours or weekends
