Job Description

GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:

The EH&S Specialist is responsible for the development and implementation of all environmental, health and safety programs. The EH&S Specialist ensures compliance to all applicable local, State and Federal environmental and workplace safety regulations.  The Specialist will ensure existing and future procedures are sufficient here at KUAS.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Responsible for the overall development, updating, implementation, and filing with specific agencies, required company health and safety programs. Responsible for EH&S written procedures, manuals, and maintaining other documentation as required.  This includes, but is not limited to:

    1. Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP)

    2. Respiratory Protection Program

    3. Hazardous Communication (Haz. Com) Plan

    4. Safety Data Sheets (SDS)

    5. Industrial Hygiene

    6. Hazardous Materials Handling

    7. Hazardous Waste Management & Disposal

    8. Storm Water & Waste Water (If applicable)

    9. Air Quality Authority To Construct And Permit(s) To Operate (If applicable)

    10. Ergonomics – office and manufacturing

    11. Emergency Response and Evacuation Plan

    12. EHS Inspections and Corrective Actions

  2. Monitors and coordinates required certifications & training for employees. Develops and delivers EHS training to employees. May include, but is not limited to:

    1. Hazardous Materials and Procedures

    2. Forklift Operations

    3. Overhead Crane and Hoist Operation

    4. Hazardous Communication

    5. Respirator Training and Fit Testing

    6. Proper ergonomics

    7. Hazardous Waste management

    8. Water Quality Awareness

    9. Air Quality Awareness

    10. General Safety Topics

       

  3. Ensures Kratos procedures are compliant with the following:

    1. US EPA Regulations including air, water and waste

    2. State and local regulations including air, water and waste as applicable

    3. Local fire department regulations

    4. Hazardous materials regulations

    5. US & State OSHA regulations

 

  1. Tracks, organizes, and updates compliance calendar, and ensures timely renewal of regulatory permits.

  2. Tracks injuries, investigates causes, and coordinates any necessary corrective actions.

  3. Tracks total recordable injury rate (TRIR) for reporting to management in support of company EH & S goals.

  4. Makes recommendations on funding changes, capital projects, and opportunities for more effective safety and environmental methods.

  5. Analyzes new material SDSs for VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) contents and ensures the material is compliant with applicable regulations. Inputs the VOC content in the appropriate line in the ERP system for the part.

  6. Analyzes new SDSs for all hazards and ensures adequate PPE (personnel protective equipment) is in place and that the hazards are communicated appropriately.

  7. Ensures that VOC usage tracking process is accurate and being reported correctly. 

  8. Runs VOC usage reports, prints data, analyzes and organizes data, and files reports in a manner to be ready to present to air inspector at any time. Monitors total air pollutant emissions to track if permitting thresholds are being approached.

  9. Oversees storm water pollution prevention plan, ensures monitoring is completed and facility remains in compliance. (If applicable)

  10. Responsible for establishing and conducting safety meetings (to include written agendas and meeting minutes. May work with department managers and Human Resources personnel to investigate employee reports of safety concerns or violations.

  11. Responsible for conducting EH & S inspections of departments and facilities, documenting any deficiencies and tracking corrective actions to completion.

  12. Understands, interprets, and analyzes regulatory and/or legal EH&S requirements to ensure company is compliant at all times.  Advises management on recommendations to implement or change current policies, practices, equipment, and infrastructure.

  13. Prepares and briefs management on safety and environmental compliance issues as necessary.

  14. Collaborates with department managers and personnel to analyze safety needs. Implements appropriate and compliant measures (i.e.: personal protective equipment, chemical storage, etc.…).

  15. Partners with Human Resources to address workplace injuries/illnesses when appropriate. Conducts accident investigations and recommends/implements corrective/preventative measures. Maintains confidentiality of all information.

  16. Complies with all company policies and business procedures.

  17. Collaborates with production operations management to review process changes, new equipment, and increased production to ensure that all regulations are followed and that all necessary permits are obtained.

     

Other Job Functions

  • Interacts with all levels of personnel, primarily with department supervisors, managers, executives, and Human Resources representatives. May report directly to Human Resources department on employee safety related issues.

  • Acts as the primary interface with EHS regulatory agencies; federal, state, and local including customer safety representatives.
  • Support company compliance with customer ground and flight safety procedures. (DCMA INST 8210.1C)

  • Other duties may be assigned.

Experience and Skills

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Moderate experience with and ability to utilize Microsoft Office suites, primarily Excel and Word.

  • Ability to maintain sensitive and confidential information as required by government standards.

  • Ability to interact effectively with peers and supervisors.

  • Ability to train others, as needed on safety and compliance related topics.

  • Ability to interact appropriately with the public when necessary.

  • Ability to adhere to workplace rules.

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to research applicable regulatory requirements and understand, communicate and implement correct procedures to ensure proper compliance within company protocol.
  • Excellent collaboration and interpersonal skills with the ability to establish strong rapport with all levels of personnel.
  • Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • First Aid / CPR / AED Certification or the ability to obtain.
  • Use of equipment designed to inspect, test, monitor, and measure safe environmental levels.
  • Familiar with the preparation of OHSA 300 logs and reporting.
  • Use of standard office equipment.
  • Proficient in MS Word and Excel.
  • Familiar with identification and application of personal protection equipment (PPE).
  • Demonstrated communication and teamwork skills with customers, co-workers and subcontractors to express ideas and safety concepts and solve problems.
  • Valid driver’s license.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Equivalent field or equivalent work experience.
  • Relevant professional certifications and experience desirable.
  • Minimum of 5 years of directly related experience in Environmental Health and Safety Compliance in a manufacturing workplace.
  • May be required to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance at the appropriate level (requires U.S. Citizenship).

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Office and or manufacturing environment.

  • Standing, walking, lifting, bending, carrying, sitting, computer keyboarding, analytical thinking, reading, writing.

  • May be required to work extended hours and/or weekends.

  • Ability to work in a non-temperature controlled environment.

  • Employee may generate, handle, manage, or work around hazardous materials and hazardous wastes.

 

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: 

10-50% May be required between other KUAS locations and vendor sites.
