Job Description:

GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:

To perform machining tasks as directed by their supervisor utilizing the CNC Vertical Milling Center (main responsibility), Bridgeport Mill, Engine Lathe and CNC Lathe as well as other Machine Shop support equipment (i.e. grinder, belt sander, cold saw, etc.).Utilize CAM software to create NC programs for 2D prismatic parts, 4 axis, complex 3D surfacing, 3+2 positional and full 5 axis NC programs.  Ability to use Vericut to verify program.  Document the machining process by creating detailed setup sheets.  Work with machine shop to update changes.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

The duties and responsibilities listed below apply to all levels of Machinist.  Each level has additional duties and responsibilities listed.

  • Create and document all programs. 
  • Comprehend dimensions, tolerances and geometric tolerances.
  • Understand and use standard drafting practices, and Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerance (GDT) per ANSI Y 14.5
  • Basic programming (G codes). 
  • Supports and exhibits the focus of zero defects as well as right-the-first-time attitude.
  • Inspect using basic inspection equipment (calipers, micrometers, depth gage, etc.)
  • Accurately adjusts machine settings to complete tasks according to specifications.
  • Uses various machine shop support equipment including Saws, Belt Sanders, Grinders, Overhead Cranes and Drill Press.
  • Basic understanding of Machine Shop practices.
  • Follows safety precautions.
  • Ensures work area and equipment are kept clean.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Ability to maintain sensitive and confidential information as required by government standards

  • Ability to effectively communicate professionally in writing or verbally with all levels of personnel.

  • Must understand ANSI Y 14.5 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
  • Must be proficient in the programming software currently in use as well as MS Word and Excel.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school education or equivalent

  • Minimum of 3 years experience as a machinist

  • Minimum of 3 years experience with CNC programing

  • Proven experience handling and machining various metals & composites

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Associates Degree or trade program

  • 5+ years experience as a machinist

  • Prior experience with Vericut 7.0

  • Experience with MasterCAM, Siemens NX 8.5, and SolidWorks or CATIVA V5 a plus

  • Knowledge of Haas / Fadal / Fanuc controllers a plus

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Physical Requirements:

  • Standing, walking, lifting, bending, reaching, grasping, stooping, kneeling, climbing.

  • Occasionally lifts and carries objects weighing up to 50lbs

  • May occasionally manipulate materials

Working Conditions:

  • May work in controlled and non-temperature controlled environments
  • Occasional exposure to noise, hazardous materials and/or chemicals

  • Works with a variety of hand tools, power tools and other related equipment

  • Works in confined spaces

  • May work extended hours or weekends
