Job Description:

Kratos Defense & Rocket Support Services is currently seeking a Sr. Optical Engineer/Scientist to support NSWC Dahlgren Dvision.  The successful candidate will perform the following duites:

• Perform Optical Engineering activities for laser/E-O systems.
• Perform system analytical and performance studies.
• Perform software and hardware definition analysis.
• Perform software & hardware development of prototypes, subsystems and system tools.
• Perform modeling and simulation engineering.
• Perform Laser/E-O development, integration, testing and evaluation.
• Perform all aspects of laboratory and field testing, including setting test goals, developing test methodologies, organizing and conducting tests, reducing test data and analyzing results.
• Produce technical reports on findings, provide system data collection and analysis, and conduct technical documentation reviews.
• Report critical finds to military and DoD civilian leadership.
• Transition replacement personnel per SOP.

Experience and Skills:

The successful candidate must have the following experience/skills:

  • Experience on U.S. Navy and Joint Laser/Electro-Optical Systems research and development programs is preferred.
  • Demonstrated abilities to interface with the Navy/Marines/Joint to develop and support technical positions, to justify technical recommendations, and to write technical publications.
  • Intimate familiarity with lab processes and work flow.
  • Bachelors Degree BS in Electrical Engineering or relevant equivalent technical engineering and professional experience performing in a technically relevant engineering field.
  • Ten (10) years of experience with high energy laser systems, specifically fiber laser technology; academic or industry research in recent laser technologies; integration of laser systems; and knowledge and experience with major components of a laser system including the optical train. 2 Experience with high energy laser (HEL) weapon systems to include elements such as: laser systems with gain media, pump sources, thermal management and control systems; optomechanics including custom design and fabrication, specification and operation; high power optical coatings, substrates, characterization and specification, beam shaping including passive beam clipping, coring and collimization; and beam control, including active and closed loop beam steering and phase control. Experience analyzing the effectiveness of HEL interactions with materials and components; laser propagation theory; and experimentation, including modeling and characterizations of laser performance in relevant military environments and ranges.
  • Must be a U.S. citizenship with an active DoD Secret clearance.
